The first of “Tower of Fragments” series was originally a full sheet painting of ripples on the water I saw while trekking in Japan. But my first attempt seemed incomplete. I experimented with painting a face in the water to fill my own perceived gap in the painting. The process was experientially rewarding but the result ultimately didn’t satisfy me; so I cropped the ripples and face, vertically inverted the composition, then added layers of paints and leaves. I was then left with the final piece. Its evolution perhaps reflects my own long trek when I first theorized the subject.
